What is OpenStudio?

Developed by the Department of Energy of the United States, OpenStudio is a software development kit (SDK) that is open-source and meant for building energy modeling (BEM). It is a software tools collection that can be used on Linux, Mac, and Windows. With EnergyPlus, OpenStudio can handle whole building energy modeling. Radiance, meanwhile, handles advanced daylight analysis. As a project, OpenStudio has already come up with several example applications. Some of these include a parametric analysis tool, a graphical model editing tool, a results viewer, and a SketchUp 3D drawing program plug-in. These can be used as individual applications and also serve as a demonstration of the integration practices and the SDK’s capabilities.

OpenStudio Benefits

Benefits

The main benefits of OpenStudio are its BEM engines, its support for large-scale analysis, and its support of developers. Here are the details:

With OpenStudio, third parties can provide their customer with an infrastructure with a common core. They can also focus on the addition of differentiating values. Files that are bulky, static, and large can be handled with EnergyPlus and other BEM engines.

Application development is also sped up thanks to how it shows the outputs and inputs of Energy Plus as an application programming interface (API) with a data model that is object-oriented and vibrant, which applications can easily work with. Abstractions that are high level are provided by OpenStudio, such as spaces and space types. It also gives functionalities such as the configuration and instantiation of standard HVAC systems.

OpenStudio can also support several analyses from a singular model. Results and inputs from other engines like the CONTAM airflow engine and the Radiance lighting engine can also be transferred.

A large-scale analysis is also supported by the OpenStudio project. These include prototype analysis that creates savings values, building stock analysis that figures out if buildings meet the specific program criteria, model input calibration, and design optimization.

A version of OpenStudio that was re-engineered and re-factored was released two years ago to stress the platform’s support of developers. With OpenStudio 2.0, creating and integrating BEM services and applications can be done more productively and easily.
